The events of August 24th in 79 AD caught the inhabitants of the bustling port city of Pompeii by surprise.

Vesuvius, a volcano that had long lain dormant, erupted after some signs of activity that the locals failed to heed.

Pliny the Younger wrote letters that described the terror of those in peril that day. In one he recounts, “You could hear the shrieks of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men; some were calling their parents, others their children or their wives, trying to recognize them by their voices. People bewailed their own fate or that of their relatives, and there were some who prayed for death in their terror of dying. Many besought the aid of the gods, but still more imagined there were no gods left, and that the universe was plunged into eternal darkness for evermore.”

The destruction of Pompeii by hot ash, pumice and gaseous surge is paradoxical. While catastrophic because few citizens were able to escape the volcanic eruption, the natural disaster also nearly perfectly preserved much of this ancient Roman city and lets visitors step back to life in ancient Roman times and witness the final moments of several residents of the city.

“[This] trip was one of the highlights of, and a perfect ending to, my two-week vacation in Italy. Seeing how well organised and executed this particular day trip was the only regret I have is that I didn’t come across your company earlier when making various tour reservations prior [for] my travels. Out of all the tours and trips I took during my stay in Rome yours was without a doubt the best,” raves M. Kivilahti, who enjoyed the day trip in May this year.

As is often the case, our guest enjoyed the personal touch offered by our exceptional staff members. She asked us to offer her sincere thanks and warmest regards to her driver-guide: “His expertise, both the way in which he admirably skillfully maneuvered the vehicle along the winding roads and the way in which he provided informative guidance along the way, was very much appreciated. I would also like to thank him for making it such a fun and memorable day.”

She says he tirelessly explained the historic sites on the tour, patiently answered everyone’s questions, and offered advice about what to see and where to buy souvenirs. She appreciated that her driver-guide was a, “great personality with a true passion for his work, and it showed.”

A client from Orange Park, Florida recently reviewed this tour on TripAdvisor under the name PPhelps74, saying: “We booked a private day trip to Pompeii and Amalfi Coast for 4 of us and had such a wonderful time! Our driver, Massimo, was so good – it’s tough to maneuver on that narrow coastline road! We absolutely loved our tour guide, Arianna – she was so informative and made our day of driving and touring very enjoyable. She has quite the sense of humour!”

And proving that Avventure Bellissime guides are the best, PPhelps74 says: “Lastly, our guide at Pompeii, Antonio, was extremely knowledgeable and managed to show us all the important highlights of Pompeii in the short time we were there. He knew all the shady spots to have us stand in while he informed us of the particular spots in Pompeii! I highly recommend this company for this tour.”
