Cannaregio, Venice Tourist information

Venice city tourist guide to the Cannaregio district of Venice that includes the Jewish Ghetto, Santa Lucia railway station, and some of the finest restaurants in Venice.

One of the few parts of Venice where the locals still live, this area also boasts some of the most beautiful churches in Venice that include the San Giovanni e Paolo, Santa Maria dei Miracoli & Jesuit Churches.

Along with sweeping views of the Venetian lagoon to admire the islands of Murano and San Michele (cemetery island of Venice) and the distant Dolomite mountains, the Cannaregio is also home to the Jewish Ghetto making it a popular district to visit for many tourists visiting Venice.

The Cannaregio district of Venice is one of the few parts of the city where Venetians still live in great numbers. Its numerous restaurants offer some of the best cuisine available in Venice at very reasonable prices. Especially in and around the Ghetto area of Cannaregio and the Foundamenta della Misericorda where you'll find a good selection of both regional and ethnic restaurants.

One of the last parts of the historic center of Venice to be developed, its canals are remarkably straight and well organized. From the Fondamenta Nuova you can enjoy sweeping views of the Northern Lagoon and the Islands of San Michele and Murano.

Cannaregio & the Jewish Ghetto is featured on our two-hour Grand Canal & Secret Venice Boat Tour as well as a Private walking tour of the Jewish Ghetto & Cannaregio.

A popular place for artists to have lived over the centuries, you can pass-by Tintoretto's house and visit his local parish church, the Madonna dell'Orto, which houses work by the great artist. The name of the church originates from a weeping statue found in a nearby garden.

Other churches worth visiting in the Cannaregio district include the Santa Maria dei Miracoli which sits like a jewel box overlooking a charming canal. The Church of the Gesuti has a spectaclar interior made of marble, as well works by some of Venice's famous artists.

Their are numerous local markets located throughout the Cannaregio district serving the numerous Venetians who still live in the area, and providing lively and colorful scenes for visiting tourists. Canneregio is home to the Santa Lucia railway station, which makes it a pratical place location to stay for tourists arriving or leaving Venice by train.

For those looking for nightlife, try the only disco in town, the aptly named "Casanova's" located on the main street heading towards the station.
