Let’s take a look at what the Ancient Rome tour includes:

The Colosseum – Ancient Rome’s most celebrated building
One of the highlights of our Ancient Rome walking tours is a visit to the magnificent Colosseum. You will have ‘skip the queue’ tickets – helping you to avoid delays and make the most of your time. Your expert tour guide will take you on a thorough tour of the stunning interior of Ancient Rome's most famous building.
You will learn how the Romans managed to build this massive structure that was originally a third of a mile in circumference on marshy ground, and how it was designed to allow an unruly crowd of some 50,000 spectators to enter and exit with ease.
During the tour you will learn how the hidden mechanisms of Ancient Rome's most celebrated building created the fabulous stage effects that accompanied the violent games held here. You’ll find out about the types of games held in Colosseum, what these events meant to Roman citizens, as well as the amphitheatre's function in Ancient Rome.

Constantine’s Arch
Then, we'll admire the Constantine's Arch – a triumphal arch which sits between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. Built to mark Constantine I’s victory at the Battle of Milvian Bridge. Our guides will tell you how its great reliefs – a sculptural technique - influenced Baroque artists in Rome as well as the function of triumphant arches in the city.

Ancient Roman Forum – the cradle of western civilisation
Then our expert guide will lead you on a fascinating walking tour through the striking remains of the Ancient Roman Forum - the cradle of Western civilization and the main square of the Roman Empire. Our guide will teach you about its history brought to life by tales of Ancient Rome's society, their beliefs as well as tales about their family and civic lives.
Through the tour you’ll also learn what role the Forum played in Ancient Rome, and its influence on succeeding generations. Your guide will also highlight important landmarks of the Ancient Forum that date from the various periods of Rome's long and great history. This part of the tour will cover the history of Ancient Rome from its origins to the age of the Roman Republic, and the glory days of the Roman Empire.
During the tour you'll also understand how these Romans who considered themselves men of the soil gave the letters S.P.Q.R their meaning and later carried them to the ends of the known world!

Palatine Hill
The walking tour of Ancient Rome will finish on Palatine Hill - a hill that has given its name to all the palaces in the world. The Palatine is an enchanted place where you can experience a fantastic vista of Ancient Rome. It’s the ideal place to reflect on everything you’ve learned and to contemplate the feats of the Ancient Romans!

The tour was great! Our guide Luca spun a wonderful story involving our family including two kids under 6 as he described the lives of gladiators and how they fought at the Colosseum. That made it so interesting and kept the kids' attention.

I would recommend this tour to families.

Francesca was a wonderful guide. She is so knowledgeable and you can tell that she loves her job. She is very personable and was very considerate of everyone's needs (always finding a shady spot or a seat for the ones that needed it). The tour was fabulous and we highly recommend it.

Not for the first time, our guide was Sergio. Sergio has an infectious nature coupled with a huge amount of knowledge of the subject matter. Coupled with his obvious enthusiasm he makes the tour an absolute delight. Apart from this, this tour is a must for anyone interested in the history of Rome. The Colosseum and the other ruins that were included are inspirational, and the explanations and descriptions provided by Sergio made this an unforgettable experience.

This was one of our two outstanding tours with Francesca. She did a great job bringing ancient Rome to life, not only with her descriptions, but also with books and photos on her iPad. She also helped us plan our afternoon.

We took the Ancient Rome tour mid-May 2015 and we had a blast! We were very lucky that our group only had 2 other people (only 4 total) so we ended up with a private tour. Sergio was our tour guide and he did a great job. His accent was a little hard to understand at times, but he was very knowledgeable and even kept things light by adding humor to the tour. Our favorite part of the tour was inside the Colosseum. Sergio was able to give us so much information about how the arena was used during ancient times and it really gave you a sense of what the times were like back then.
Since our group was so small, we even ended up with a slightly longer tour because Sergio wanted to give us as much information as possible.
There is a lot of walking during this tour. Several steep stairs inside the Colosseum, and many stairs when climbing up Palatine Hill. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and if it's sunny a hat would be helpful. We ended up getting a little sunburned.

This was the best tour of our three city trip to Italy! Thank you for a great time Sergio!!

Claudia was great and the tour was fantastic! I learnt lots about the Colosseum and it is good that we have the headsets as they were really helpful. We could go around (staying close of course) to take photos and continue to listen to what the guide is saying. Small group is great. It was a delight despite the extremely hot weather. My recommendation is for people who are planning to go on this tour to bring an umbrella or a very large hat. You won't regret it.

We booked the 3 different tours of Rome and absolutely loved Franchesca. She was simply outstanding as a guide, as she has the reference books, iPad pictures, and history for every single historical site we visited. If you can get Francesca, you will not be disappointed. We especially loved her commentary on the Colosseum and Vatican, and totally enjoyed our van tour in the evening and visit to a local restaurant for food and wine. Thank you, Franchesca, for a simply perfect day in Rome. It was educational and more importantly, FUN. Regards, the Hilbert tour group.

Our tour guide, Cecilia, was just wonderful. Personable, knowledgeable, informative and easy to understand. She brought visual aids and fielded our myriad of questions. She had recommendations for lunch that were just terrific, and spent extra time with us as well. We couldn't have asked for a better guide. Thank you!

Francesca was our tour guide for the Colosseum and Ancient Rome walking tour. She has a degree in history and was extremely well-informed. She came equipped with books and an ipad presentation. She got us ‘skip the line’ tickets to the colosseum and gave us a fascinating account of its history. Then she walked us through the ruins of the Ancient Forum as she related interesting anecdotes about the past as well as current events. She is very passionate about her subject and an engaging person. We had a great tour with her.

We had a wonderful tour of the Colosseum and Palatino Hill with Francesca! We learned so much on this tour in early May 2014. Highly recommend! It was at a good pace and a small group. Great experience. Francesca was easy to understand and really knows her stuff! The next day we toured The Vatican, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica with Luca! Luca was so passionate and knowledgeable! It's an exhausting tour..... so much to see! But you simply must do all of these! Best tour guides!!!

We had the Ancient Rome tour with Francesca and despite an initial misunderstanding regarding the starting time of the tour we soon forgot as she was a incredible guide. She was clear in her pronounciation and explained everything so well and in detail.

She gave us a very good recommendation for lunch after the tour and that was one of our best meals in Italy!

She was friendly and helpful and patient as one of the girls in the tour was slightly deaf. We really loved her and would love to have her again as our guide!

Truly great tour!

We were recommended by another South African who also used your tour and said you were fantastic!

We enjoyed the guided tour with Sergio. It was a group of 6 (4 actually for the Colosseum since one couple was late due to metro delays). Because it was a small group we interacted a lot with Sergio and felt we got more than the normal tour. The small group tour was worth it.
