We were picked up exactly on time at the appointed place by Giovanne in his shiny black Mercedes. He drove us to Verona and during the hour long ride, not only did he inform us of various local facts, but also subtly discovered our preferences and specific interests. As we found out, he then customized the day taking this into account. In Verona, we were handed over to our local guide, Sylvia. We started with an espresso at an outdoor cafe (at our request), where we took in the splendour of the main square and basked in the brilliant sunshine. Sylvia then walked us through Verona. She took us to the main sites, but also through lesser traveled parts. There, we got to discover obscure frescos and even underground ancient ruins from 100 BC, including one in the basement of a department store! Sylvia too, very quickly figured out our travel style/pace and timed our 3 hours in Verona perfectly. We even strayed into a quaint shop/museum with antique printing blocks, where we were able to buy some beautiful hand crafted pieces of art and stationery. She then safely delivered us back to Giovanne. He had offered us a choice of lunch in Verona, or a small family run restaurant in the hills of Valpolicella. Thankfully, we had elected the latter. As it turns out, Giovanne, realizing that one of us was vegetarian and liked Amarone, had called ahead and talked the kitchen into preparing a traditional risotto in Amarone sauce! As an unexpected bonus, the owner invited me to his cellar and I was able to procure a 2003 Bertani Amarone to accompany our feast. The setting was sublime, as it was on the terrace overlooking the Valpolicella hills. This optional part of the trip is highly recommended. We then were driven to Allegrini winery for a tour and tasting, which was incredible. We do love Amarones, and had been torn between the pure winery tour and the Verona/winery tour. I would highly recommend the latter, as you get the best of both worlds, plus an unbelievable lunch. Giovanne then drove us safely back to the water bus stop at Pl Roma. What an amazing 9+ hours. The focus on service and true pride in the region and fanatical desire to please the client was refreshing. We felt more like being entertained by friends rather than tour guides. Well done!
